I feel like the most recent chapter (36) takes place inside his mind just as he's about to turn into a monster. The monster is trying to find his true desire deep inside his thoughts. I dont think he'll turn into one though, if a desire isn't found. It's probably looking through his memories. I doubt this author would do an "everything was a dream" ending.
