Well I know multiple people on this discussion saw it coming...I guess at least Saitou-san pushed him down but didn't actually go through with rape when they were kids?
This one hit home for me though, having been assaulted then sometimes feeling attracted to people who look like my attacker...just the thought of being in the same room with him puts me in the beginning stages of a panic attack though so, yeah, I don't know how realistic this story is in the end. But hey it's a yaoi so what can I expect?
Bro I don't think you should just tell people who have been assaulted how to feel on the depiction of something only they've been through in media. Fantasy or not it is a huge responsibility on authors when tackling heavy topics such as sexual assault in their books to do it right. Because something they see in fantasy was once someone's living nightmare. It's not supposed to be educational but at the very least emotionally realistic. We don't compare reality and morality, that's true since reality will always be uncontrollable , but a story is not such, is it?
if you have been hurt it is not the fault of the author. He can do what he wants, like you who feel hurt and you may very well not read this kind of story. I'm not telling those who have suffered violence how they should feel but just avoid certain stories given the situation. The author does not take people by force and forces them to read. But imposing your pain on others is selfish, no one forces you to read. when I read these things I think that you are not able to anything, do not have a will of your own, that if you are not watched by others you would take all the evil in the world. that you do not have a will of your own. Hello! Grow up! You have to be responsible for yourself and not others.
Well duh it's a fantasy, as I said it's yaoi so what can anyone expect. I enjoy romances but don't like seeing women get treated like trash so I read yaoi, go figure. Not that I think it's okay for guys to treat each other like trash in real life either but at least I don't find it triggering when I read about it. It's not even than I hated this story, I liked the uke's character but wished the ending had been a little less like "oh well, you assaulted me but I'm still sexually attracted to you so let's skip off into the sunset." I felt like there was an opportunity for some more complexity to the plot and characters that got wasted. Mangaka can do what she likes but I felt it was a bit lazy.
Also JWK is right, it's a dick move to try to tell somebody to get over it when they tell you they have been assaulted and something reminds them of it. "I'm not talking about you" is a cop out, because clearly you are talking at me if you're replying to my post. Luckily I'm far enough out from the assault that I'm not devastated when some stranger is a dick about it, but I'm sure there are others who would be. Recognize that even what you write online can have real impact on people, and the fact that you never see it doesn't mean you're not responsible for it.
if a person has suffered some trauma it is not the responsibility of others. Do not go to read something where it is clearly written that there are these issues. To give you an example, if a person suffers from the breakup with her boyfriend and watching other couples make her feel bad it is certainly not the fault of other couples but a problem of her, she cannot go and tell him not to hug or be in love. Others cannot be responsible for a feeling of yours, do you understand? with this no one says that you do not suffer or diminish their pain, but the blame cannot fall on others who do not feel the same thing. this imposing one's feelings on others is selfish.
As I said before, it's not really the material in the comic that's so bothersome here, it's your attitude in saying that it's not okay for me to read the comic and then express my feelings about it based on my own life experience. I'm pretty sure you were able to predict that your reaction to me was going to be upsetting. That's why you claimed that you weren't talking about me in your original post, no? Because you knew it would be upsetting but wanted to try to get out of responsibility for it. But it was more important for you to get off on putting your ignorant opinion out there, so you did it anyway.
As to my feelings here, I'm not talking about breaking up with a boyfriend in this case, I'm talking about being assaulted by a man thirty years older than me when I was in elementary school. You know what that does to a person, when their first experience of sexuality is forced on them by someone older? It creates this weird ambivalence where you feel the normal human attraction to others, but also feel fear and shame because the first time you experienced it was in a nonconsensual manner. It's a constant push-pull that is very common for childhood sexual abuse survivors. It's one reason that I kind of liked the uke in this manga, because it actually portrayed that pretty accurately. It was the conclusion of the manga that I found inaccurate, as previously stated. I am allowed to have thoughts and emotions about things based on my life experience and I'm not going to let anybody shut me down just cuz they get off on being a dick.
I too have suffered violence but I'm certainly not doing great or imposing my suffering. What can you know about it? of course, you don't know as I don't know about you. But this is not why I go to impose my pain on others or to show it off just to put myself on the side of reason. Here it is not said that your pain does not matter but you cannot bother others because of your own problem. With this nobody wants to offend you, you are free to receive the message as you see fit.
Somehow those jeans with the ripped knees are super sexy
