Dude the MC was still a child who longed for fatherly affection... You cannot condemn a child for wanting recognition from their parents despite being subjected to abuse or neglect. As an adult its easier to let go of an abusive familiar bond, however it's tough for a teenager or a child.
And it's clear that MC had resentment towards his dad, and that emotional build up kept continuing over years, so when the father acted like an actual parent for the first time, MC's emotions spilled causing him to long for the fatherly love he was denied of
