I think besides her just being fat=ugly it was more like she ate her feelings and didn't take care of herself, made it fat=ugly. But yeah, if the artist wanted to make her ugly it was pretty half assed.
I don't think this is the author's fault, instead i think they represented real world judgements quite well. A lot of society is like that in real life, where they believe if you're fat then you're ugly. It's fine if you want to drop it tho lol. A lot of this is psychological, the society in there hated slyvia not only because she didn't look like them (skinny) but also cuz she had a nasty personality (but we know it's cuz she was treated poorly)
