There was plenty fish in the pond, but they all died (or are cursed/seduced/betraying lil crack nits)... No fish has been caught in the ship and the ship is still firmly tied to the pier. Sigh*

Their outfits are a nod to The Fifth Element and the whole comic is based on the "born sexy yesterday" trope. I don't know if they ever explicitly named any of their references, but aside from Guardians of the Galaxy, there are plenty of older space themed films and novels to draw inspiration from.
