Yes why do you get the idea that he is talking about Jo and TJ ?
Also it's not a promise, Jo wouldn't even be aware of that, why isn't Ian explaining things to him

What I meant by promise is he decided he'll come back to Jo, and he's not considering TJ since he denied he's going to him.
Doesn't matter if it's out right or a monologue, he said he's coming back to Jo and be able to really reach him.

But didn’t he also denied the fact he is going with Jo ?
In fact he never mentions Jo’s name nor TJ’s name. It says “you”. It’s not “Jo” nor “TJ”. However, if we read his while inner thoughts, we can understand he is talking about TJ when he says “you”. The fact that Jo is in front of him while he has these thoughts doesn’t mean he is talking to Jo.

I am not part of the fandom war either, and if giving my opinion or having a preference in the EG means to people that I am into the fandom war then it’s not my problem, I am not looking to pick fights. I am here to see how this story unfolds, yes I have a preference between TJ and Jo, and I try to read things as neutrally as possible too. I am not trying to “make things go my way”, as if Ian ending with Jo or TJ would change my life ╮(￣▽￣)╭

You've got a point, but I don't think he'll be talking about returning to TJ while he's having a heartfelt conversation and a confession of love with Jo.

I understand why you say it doesn’t make sense, but I can picture it really well since it happens right after Ian explained why he leaves alone for now. Ian revealing his feelings to Jo happens after that. I think if Jo didn’t ask Ian about his feelings, Ian wouldn’t have said anything because it’s already hard for him to leave Jo. Wording his feelings makes thing harder for him to leave. He even tried to turn back

I just hope that if the author do make Ian meet TJ again, people won’t accuse the author of saying it her storytelling didn’t make any sense because it does, just not for everyone.

To me, what doesn’t make sense, is Ian meeting Jo again in the futur with the intention of being lovers because the narrator explicitly said “ Yet, that possibility, they decided to leave unopened forever.” about their romantic relationship.
