Personally, I believe neglecting is also a form of abuse. A child needs their family's love growing up. Now that he has become a teenager after being neglect for so long... of course when one of the parents started showing love, it's weird and confusing. They'll start doubting and thinking what they have done to make their parents act like that or what's wrong with their parents to be doing this now. They'll be thinking if this is another form of abuse.
I'm not saying that she's bad but she was just too young to become a mother and she's a social butterfly at that so of course a 22 years old mom would to some extend neglected her child to have some fun. Also, how's the husband treating the son? From these 2 chapters, it seemed that he's been using his authority and care about his dukedom rather than taking care of his neglected child. Inwhich, in this case, both of the parents 'neglected' their child.
So it's understandable where he's coming from when one day, out of the blue moon, his mother who has been neglecting him for his whole life started to 'care'? Kid be thinking why now of all times? He had already became accustomed to the neglect play. I hope they'll work it out and finally become a 'family' again.
The point here is... how will she redeem herself now that she realised what she had done wrong after all these years. That's what I'm rooting for her and I hope her son will somehow understand her. And her husband... how healthy is their relationship? What will they become?
As someone who is a first born and had been somewhat neglected while being treated like a trophy, I do wholeheartedly wish him a warm family. I hope they figure it out soon ლ(´ڡ`ლ)
