the world isn't a kind place, and even if they're a straight couple, private and personal things like that should be talked about in a private setting.
church communities can be annoying and invasive no matter what your identity is. rumors blowup really badly there and can get you isolated
i feel that I have to mention also that there are religions and churches where gay people or people who are different are shamed. and, in extreme cases, even harassed
even without the gayness, reaction of church communities like the mc's mom towards lgbt, sex and pregnancy before marriage, etc.
can be horrible or not so desirable
