Erm like I don't disagree with you, this does come from a place of fetish and racism. But since you haven't read this, this story actually doesn't glorify slavery or whatever. These stories very often depict the white/paler side as the big evil and the darker/poc side as friendlier people and society.
Even this one, spoiler but they're literally about to go and defeat their oppressor.

It's still fetish don't get me wrong. But I think considering you haven't even read it, some of your comments don't fit

in this story theyre also very racist/xenophobic (idk which is a more appropriate term) towards Roma people. like the entire subplot is about a mystical nomadic people called the Rom (like cmon, they weren't even subtle), and characterizes them as violent, unpredictable, cruel, deranged, perverse, and vicious. having read and enjoyed the story in general, i think it would be really unfortunate for us all to gloss over that and hyperfocus on the conflict between the euro presenting and the east asian/north african presenting people. like cool, we can go defeat the white oppressors but are we all gonna sit there and ignore the fact that they made the real villains in this story the Rom who infiltrated their empire? the author is not discreet with this and we can and should have conversations about it bc without addressing it we might internalize a subconscious bias against Roma people in real life. thats literally how they became an oppressed group in the first place - rumors and stories casting them in a devious light.

Honestly yeah that's very true. I never want to deny that this is racist and we should recognize that and have conversation, I've made a comment about that before. Think my purpose in this comment was to like, abide the anger towards readers who are still reading it while also recognizing that, since I know of is just talking in general with no story context.

it didn't come off that way, it just skipped over the major problems that DO exist in favor of highlighting a redeeming element, when in reality both the redemptive nuanced plotline AND the underpining anti-roma mentality coexist in this story. we just should talk about both. i appreciated how you framed the dynamic you did mention in your original comment, i just wanted to add onto it bc the conversation is meaningless without full context

And I also wanna agree that the racism like it is more prominent in the story because if you really look at the setting and where it’s placed and would be understandable that there is slaves and racism between different people but overall I don’t think that it’s so bad to the point that it’s unreadable
