With no memories, he was doomed to do exactly the same s**t that got him so much negative karma in his last life in the first place (with the end result that this time he probably wouldn't get a chance to repeat it, but rather get sent directly to be reborn as a cockroach). With his memories, there is the possibility of redeeming himself and avoiding that fate, but the price to pay in exchange for that may be heavier than just dealing with an agonizying fear of falling even lower, and a tormenting and guilty conscience (letting go of the mc, for the duration of at least a thousand lifetime cycles, would probably be just the start of it...).
If you really think this through both of these characters' point of view, then "redemption" is quite a b**ch... and her name's "reincarnation".
Why I think this revenge is totally poetic justice
-The mc was publicly out of the closet before the little bro framed him. It was just the little bro who kept his own gay orientation a secret, while taking advantage of their father's homophobia to turn him against his older bro (the mc) in order to become his new "favorite" and thus the new heir.
-The little bro showed he was not above letting his father make empty marriage proposals in public, while knowing full well he would never have any real feelings for her, if it meant decieving a woman just so he could marry her for her money and influence.
