They're gaining strength to prepare for the prophecy elder gu (the ghost with him) about something like the end of the world or what? And also while finding the things they need to extend elder gu's spirit form and things to make his physical body.
But elder gu is the ghost he got at the treasure place, yes? That's a bit recent, right? Why did he leave the place he originated from, the one with one of his sons? Is he looking for something? Looking for his other sons, maybe? I forgot it's been so long lol
I think his first goal was to take revenge to those who betrayed him but then along the way of looking for things to make him strong again he met that elder gu then told him about the prophecy about the darkness or the end something, now that became his priority to stop this havoc from happening.
Also along the way find a way to restore elder gu's physical body
Everyone loves irritates the MC, that already have a tiny patience. They surely have death wish
Little patience?! He's able to sit there silently and calmly sipping his tea while a bunch of weaklings insult him, degrade him, laugh at him, and other such things. Only when others try to stand in between him and his goals, or when they attack him, does he generally attack back.
Considering how a single wrong look can warrant a beating by a lot of people's standards in that universe, he has the patience of a saint. :P
Both dad and son are very overprotective about each other, it's kinda cute. But, lol, mc is so extreme about the people who tries to "hurt" his dad
