that would pose a huge problem because first of all international calls cost a fortune and secondly NO BOARDING school is going to just allow a student to place such an expensive call unless it is to BLOOD RELATIVES period i should know my second oldest spent most of her formative years in Japan or Germany with her mother and my ability to call her was to say the least limited to less than 10 minutes per call and only 1 or 2 calls a month because that one call normally ran me 20+ dollars

true but most cell companies still charge a pretty penny for international calls still not nearly as much as a land line but still more than a call across town or even across the state

I'm pretty sure most carriers will throw unlimited international calling on your plan for like 15/mo. That's not so bad.
(and that's aside from apps like Skype or Discord that use the internet to the same effect basically for free.)
that is part of what i was trying to get at i lived in the Western part of the US and my daughter and her mother lived in either Germany for her mothers work or in Japan which both have HUGE time differences meaning i was awake and on my way to work and my daughter was on her way to bed so the logistics are a nightmare and yes we have skype and lots of other apps today however that all goes along with timing and the COST that many can not afford like the mention of an international calling plan and yes some carriers do have international plans for pretty cheap today however not all are like that i know my last carrier charged 30 extra a month for the international calling and if i wanted to do any kind of texting or video chat that was added on as DATA charges which added up fast keep in mind my last experience with international calling was all of 10 years ago now i just use my computer lol
she is doing good she gave me 2 wonderful grandsons before finding her soulmate that i now see as just another one of my daughters (yes she is as gay as gay gets ) and they are now living in Canada while she is going through one of their universities so that she can become a neurologist that researches Multiple sclerosis so that she can try and find a cure for all of us with MS which includes her and myself
