They both live to together in the end. I do agree that Hayato could've tried to be less of an asshole toward Nagisa. He really just continued to play the cold-hearted prick when he could've told Nagisa the truth from the get go. I get that because of Nagisa's traumatic experience he didn't want to ruin his relationship with him by pursuing him, but him becoming one of the researchers and acting the way he did made things worst.
