speaking from experience it tends to pale in comparison, in the heat of the moment ya brain clings to any experience that's of the same genre (i have no idea how to say this in a smart way but genre: sexual violation) and it can warp what feels safer in comparison. they’re not fake memories, just warped ones.

In very traumatic scenarios it’s a defense mechanism to try to self soothe and escape to a better place, but there’s also this thing called mood congruency. So then brain tries to find anything to stop person from breaking, mood congruency makes it easier to recall the closest thing to the current scenario, memories get warped and reconstructed.
It’s not super different from Stockholm. A tiny bit of mercy in a terrible scenario appears that much more profound and people tend to hold on to it.
Not saying that’s *always* the case, but it’s a surprisingly common survival mechanism as far as I’m aware. No experience though… just classes and theories.
