Karas in particular has been at the frontlines of the war since he was still a teenager, so it’s clearly dragged on long enough that mercy to children would have allowed those children to grow up and try to take revenge. How many times have you read a story where someone manages to survive/escape and then devotes the rest of their life to getting revenge on the people who killed their family??
