My theory is that since Dan is afraid of being alone, his grandma won't pass until Dan and JK meet again. The author will probably have her pass then and Dan ends up relying on JK for comfort and maybe, JUST MAYBE, JK will make Dan realize that he isn't alone and he'll be there for him.
