Reason why ML is calling him average and this and that behind his back, not letting him stay with the group of friends etc is because he is the crazy possessive type. He likes his friends but he also cannot risk them developing feelings for the MC so he’s keeping them away and changing their views on the MC by calling him average etc to discourage them. And those other bullying he’s letting it slide, escape his ears and not defending the mc because for him it’s better than them liking the MC. Like he’d rather have potential rivals dislike the MC than to like him, without considering the MC’s feelings because ML is selfish and only wants the MC for himself. Also when the friend talked about the cranes and calling it a nuisance or something, it was more like “Don’t you find it a nuisance to keep receiving those? (Why don’t you give it to me instead?)” because the friend wants them as mentioned near the end of the chapter. But because it was within the MC’s POV it got cut and he misunderstood.
Now I’m not excusing him and their behaviors. He still should’ve apologized and explained it properly to the MC. I guess because it’s kinda short but the execution of the “revelation” was lackluster because of the lack of communication. It didn’t feel satisfying
