It’s not even the story for some of these. I actually liked the plot of some of these and then sh happens and they like BYE. Like what?

Most BL writers don't write with a purpose, but with a ship idea.

They like the idea of these two characters being together, not what happens.

Worse still, they like situations, not plot.

What this means, is that you get stories that have very good beginnings and very bad ends because they stuff everything they like into the front.

It would honestly be a joke to call these people writers because they aren't writing as they are just making conveniences for themselves. They write interesting beginnings and even interesting middles, not because the story is good, but because the fragments of ideas they had just so happen to be good.

If you genuinely want to write something, you need to have an ending to it that has purpose. This goes a lot for shounen too.

Romance also lends itself better to one shots than it does anything too long since it's a pretty straight forward topic.

So, when a BL writer sits down and comes up with an idea, they don't come up with an end or a purpose, but a beginning and an idea. They don't really know what they are going to do, they just make a sort of story and cross their fingers.

Actually a really good example where this does NOT happen is in a lot of visual novels like Slow Damage.

The reason why Slow Damage was lauded as being a masterpiece (I'd argue against that tbh, only Fujieda's route could be considered that good) is because it specifically addresses this problem most BL fans are very used to - that is, good beginning shitty end. By nature, visual novels have the tendency to be better at this since there is the rule of saving the best for the "true" route, but Slow Damage does this particularly well because its entire story was basically a save for the ending. Everything that happened built up to the ending. What this means is that the people who made this game wrote it with the ending and the story's purpose in mind.

Most BLs don't do this.

So when a story 'ends' abruptly, it's not really that the author just suddenly gave up, but that they just never had an ending in mind. I don't think the 'good' yaoi end off well either most of the time, they just 'happen' to end slightly better than most so people laud them as being excellent.

Then there are oneshots. Oneshots are unique in that the purpose of a oneshot is mood moreso than story often. Even Harada isn't limited to this. Harada is a mood more than they are a story because they require the reader to understand the mood to understand the story. This is inherently the nature of a short story. So yes, while oneshots have very definite and usually pretty good endings, that's because it's a short story and if an author botches that up, they are truly special.

Then there are the good endings. Good endings are endings are like Slow Damage. The ending is permeated throughout the story and you are prompted the point of the story throughout the entire reading. Slow Damage suffers a little bit in that it revealed more than necessary, but it did so enough that when the ending came out, everyone can agree it is the best ending. It's the ending that makes sense. Most of Slow Damage revolved around the MC, Towa, helping others out with their problems, but the true ending has Towa receiving the much needed help, which is something that the built up to. They didn't even needed to honestly, since by the end the only character people really wanted to know anything about was Towa.

But the point is, a story needs to work towards an end. If the story doesn't work towards an end, then it'll seem abrupt. Even if the ending is actually well suited to the story itself, it might get cancelled if it isn't spoon fed to readers. This is best found in MHA.

The ending to MHA is the perfect ending for Midoriya as a character, but people hate it because it ruins their immersion of the situation the author had promised in the beginning. MHA has functionally the Full Metal Alchemist ending where he exchanged everything he wanted to stay as he is as a person. It is a good ending, but it's so hated because Full Metal Alchemist was 1) better paced 2) never sold itself as a never-ending boost up story like MHA. Midoriya's ending is a harsh wake up call to everyone about what is means to be a good person, and people don't want to handle that. MHA also suffered under a sudden push to end, so it was rushed as well. The author probably didn't really know what to do, I honestly think its ending was just a massive coincidence when it overlapped perfectly with Midoriya's character.

This is basically why a lot of BL endings just suck. Even the so-called good ones aren't 'good' as they are just 'better' and people don't really think that hard about them so they don't care.

First of all, I appreciate you so much for taking the time out of your day to write this beautiful essay. And honestly I think I get it now. It's still kind of sad to see manhwas leaving on just the worst possible note ever but guess that's manhwas by artists without proper planning ig. I do think ones with an actual story behind them such as novels tend to end better as they've been planned out. Visual novels that have amazing plotlines, well orchestrated choices that have an effect on the storyline and endings too.
Also bls gotta balance relationships with plot so most tend to be kinda unbalanced especially for people with deadlines. (￣∇￣")

eg. You borrowed 1 million from Loan shark company A and they put an interest rate of 35% per annum, after a year you'll owe them 1 million, the principal amount plus the interest rate that is $350,00, so you'll go to loan shark company B and borrow $1,350,000 and pay off your debt, now you owe loan sharks company B that amount for let's say again 35% per annum, so after a year the interest amount on $1,350,000 would be $472,500 so you have the pay them a total of $1822500 and it keeps on going until you have no choice but to sell your body to a rich ceo alpha hoping he'd fall in love with you after he uses your body as he pleases for a year lmaoo.

ye but isnt the interest rate for if you cant pay it back in a certain amount of time? ╥﹏╥ so why couldnt I borrow right before the deadline and pay it so I don't have to pay interest ╥﹏╥

also loan shark company do a background check on you, if they know that you already have a certain amount of debt and your income is nowhere near even the interest amount then they'd simply deny from giving out loan cause they want a client who is capable of paying back the loan, so this concept won't even work to start with lol.

Interest rate concept is for them to earn out of it, if they give you a million and you give them back after a year without any interest, it'd be a loss for them cause in that amount of time they could have invested that money somewhere and earned out of it but rather they lent it to you so ofcourse they want something out of it too.

No, but that's because even if it were possible you'd be stufk in a loop, not because of the interest rate (it does not go up for frequent clients if they always pay back in time. They would reject you tho if they can't make any profit off of you) nor because of background checks (it just ain't true for every country. You see, doxxing is a reality in US, but not in my country, for example, as our information is not as easily available.)

It would be crazy hard but you could ask for a million to one loan shark investing in a (don't know how or were) place you are sure you are gonna get profit (good luck with that because the police can't find out)
Then ask for another million plus maybe three times the interest ( so you can pay the first loan, the interest, have the necessary money if the first loan shark increases the interest with telling you (you have to make sure you get a termination of the contract signed) ) if everything goes well you can invest the other two times the interest you got from the second loan shark.
If you are lucky from the two investments you make you could get enough to pay for the second loan
And if you are even more lucky you will still have some money left

The ml's aren't the greenest flag but idc cause they're exactly the way i like it, stoic, possessive and rude to everyone but the mc <3 what's even more amazing is how they break the stereotype of ukes being emotionally manipulated by the semes like here? NUH UH they'll do what they want and the semes will have to comply at the end no matter how much they try to control the icons. I'm genuinely in love with how interesting the plot is in both.

Okay so, I just finished song of reverberation. Here’s my thoughts if you still wanna hear them (￣∇￣"). So first off CHINESE WITH NO CENSORSHIP??? WHAT? NANI? SHENMA? okay okay okay but fr right off I was kinda confusion but then the plot kicked in and…omg the concept of it is actually so poetic, I really liked the concept of the curse and like the fake lei Lin’s it’s actually really poetic. (I say poetic to plots that got a flowy and aesthetic vibe to it, idk how to explain it in any other words ╥﹏╥) like it’s actually really interesting.
But I have to say, after about 40 chapters, I lost the plot. Not cause it’s messy but because I’m stupid and I’m confusion on a few things but I still think it’s well written regardless.
The Mc…he kinda annoyed me a bit at times (￣∇￣")BUT, I liked his overall character. (The random headbutts, I love it). And it’s like they really expanded on like his magic learning abilities and not just “omg I can use magic and I’m op” like a lot of other cliche ahh stories, love that. But you were right, he wasn’t the type to let people trample over him but still had realistic reactions when showing weakness and had his flaws, which I respect, not every character is supposed to be perfect. So I think he’s pretty well written.
The Ml….um..I’m not the biggest fan of the ML. Don’t get me wrong, I love how they expanded on his character and his behavior and possessiveness is actually understandable considering what happened to him but…for like the first 40-50 chapters, his behavior reminded me of those scumbag Semes from those Chinese manhuas where they treat the uke like shit until the uke runs away and suddenly they all possessive. NOT THE SCUMBAG BIT, but the part where they start being possessive of the uke trying to get the, back bit, like the behavior is quite similar so I’m not a huge fan of him im sorry. (It’s not him, I understand his behavior but still it can’t help but remind me of those ppl T-T)
That white hair brother dude, I actually kinda sympathized with him after that flashback with the bullies and that black haired ugly bitch. But then he kidnapped the Mc and erased his memories and the deal was off.
In my opinion, my fav character was….the purple hair magic shop guy with that bird. Idk how to explain it but for some reason I felt the Mc had more chemistry with him than he did with the ml. Maybe the plot was plotting a bit too hard but for some reason I just didn’t feel anything for the chemistry between the Mc and ML. DON’T GET ME WRONG, the development of their relationship is very well written and actually understandable, but I just did really feel anything, until the very end after the curse was lifted and the Mc was like “he don’t love me no more” and he ml shows up and was like “I LOB YOUUUU” and he was like “OMGGG > <“ that part was really cute, I loved that part, but the rest of the Mc and ml moments…mmmmm not really feeling it. (￣∇￣")
Another part that I really liked was the fact that so many side characters actually got a story of their own that connects to the plot, and yk I love that, alongside the plot I know how hard it is to cram in so many back stories + a complex plot that dominates the story, so respect to whoever wrote it. And ofc the actual truth behind the curse + the villains actions it all makes perfect sense (in terms of fitting together, in terms of me actually understanding everything? I’m dumb)
But yea, I can actually understand why you like so much. I can’t say it gave me a lot of excitement but what I can say is that it’s a really well written story so KEEP PROMOTING MASTERPIECES (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

Right!? agreed with the poetic thing, the concept of a curse like that was a first for me so it was really interesting.
I get it, its easy to lose the plot considering how complex it is and there's a wide base to cover too considering the number of characters.
mc was definitely annoying at first but it also made sense cause his reactions were realistic. You described his personality so well i couldn't agree more! and yess I love that too, the fact that his magical abilities were given a logical reason and he learnt to use them as time went on.
Also he goes to ML like "I know you want to protect me but I can't be in a passive state" Yes this ladies and gentlemen is what we call a strong uke! He ain't no damsel in distress. Ahhh I love him so much!!
LMAOOO i can see how the ml comes off like that and understandable because he became kinda devoid of emotions as lei Lins kept dying to protect himself from getting hurt again and again so it makes sense for him to be possessive before he could feel other emotions cause he just wanted Lei Xi to be by his side and stay protected by him.
Yess felt the same about the white haired brother lol, i kinda thought he'd be second ml in a love triangle with lei xi at start but was relieved to find that wasn't the case.
I kinda agree, mc's relationship with the purple haired guy was much better than with ml, i think its cause purple haired was quite expressive and helpful like a total green flag with mc and he gave mc the freedom to make his descisions and he'd be there for him when he needed help, this is what the mc wanted from the ml but like i said before ml's reactions were the totally opposite cause of how the curse had affected him and his experience so throughout the story his expression was mostly neutral or anger which obviously doesn't help in seeing much of a chemistry between them. omgg lol the way you described curse lifting and confession part (≧▽≦)
So true, i couldn't agree more with the side characters story thing, more often than not whenever an author tries to incorporate side characters into the main plot and then give them a background story too they end up half assing either the side characters story or the main plot so it was really refreshing to have a perfect balance in this area in the story. Respect to author nim Cynnie!!! And yess the last parts too made sense with the villains like you said, there were many hints along the story related to the lifting of the curse, I just love how those small details were added to make it all make sense at the end.
I see your perspective on the excitement aspect. The story's plot-driven nature means character emotional development takes a secondary role, hence limiting emotional investment. Personally, I enjoy stories where romance is a subplot, allowing characters to approach challenges with logic rather than emotional impulsiveness. I'm glad you found the writing well-crafted.
