I think it's because the characters are anthropomorphic animals? Maybe? I, for example, had my expectations really low before reading. Fortunately, I was so wrong. This manga is marvelous. The characters have so many layers *-*
For me it was also the anthroporphic animals and the very slowly beginning of the story. I since I tend to get easily distracted I would have to re-read the same long paragraph over and over so I quit this many times but my curiosity won me over and now I like this series
