from a reading webtoon standpoint, I've seen arch dukes mean a number of different things, it can be a direct line that is not crowned, a contingent family to the throne, a founding family to the country, someone that contributed substantially to the country, or a principality.

Yeah, I know the general meaning of it it just feels like the archduke in here feel unimportant by how I think his territories being small (just my assumption) and how there's isn't any other title mentions in here other than Lord or archduke

oh okay but we've seen that just because you have a high title doesn't translate to prestige. This head of the family hasn't been doing the necessary socializing and internal upkeep it takes to run the family. he runs off and leave most of the work to Fern and just doing paperwork and a few excursions aint enough. the heir apparent is not skilled (enough) which led to his circle degrading as well.

Yurgenschmidt is the name of their country. The country is ruled by an absolute ruler called the Zent or the royal family's King (or Queen) who passed down the Zent title to their heirs since the royal family hold largest amount of mana in their whole country.

The position of Aub or Archduke is the one who rule over the duchies, granted control of the land by the authority of the Zent (somewhat like city mayor or governor equivalent in our time).

Under Aub there's Giebe (somewhat like provincial mayor or governor equivalent in our time). They are the governing noble of a local province within a duchy, granted control of the land by the authority of the Aub. Geibe can either be a Count/ Earl, a Viscount or a Baron.

The position of Aub & Zent are mostly hereditary unless they are not qualified (this is mostly true for Zent's requirement, since they upheld everything in their country through country Foundation Magic which gives mana through the land including magical tools & country gates. Aub also requires large amount of mana, chosen among the heirs to maintain the Foundation Magic of their duchy). The heirs can either be by birth or through adoption.

The Zent naturally has the right to take away the title of Aub and appoint someone else since the Zent is the one created the Foundation Magic for each duchy, it means they are the one who created duchies & draw it's borderlines.

There's a ranking system for the duchies in Yurgenschmidt. The more higher the ranking, the more influence, prestige, power, fame, cooperation & responsibility they have in helping the Zent for the sake of the country. There's also classification of duchies ranging from greater, middle & small which depends on the size of the land and population per duchy.

There are 25 duchies in Yurgenschmidt before the civil war & 21 after.

In Ehrenfest's case, (I'm not sure if their line is from royal family or branch line that will not inherit the Zent title) the new Archduke came from Central / Sovereign (country's main place of Royal governance) after the rebellion against former Zent & change of duchy name from Eisenreich to current Ehrenfest.

Yeah the world building in this story was really great and detailed, very unique including the mannerisms, colors, seasons, days, clothing rules, adult age, working age, marriage age, people classifications, etc.

I have read the web novel that's why I'm hooked, it's full of details XD

There are also rules, duties, customs (names, clothing, etc.), communications, mannerisms depending per people classifications (and sometimes gender)..

Different for commoners & nobles

For commoners it depending if:
•capital citizens or rural (aso depends if direct control of Archduke or under Giebe)
•jobs like merchants, craftsmen, farmer, etc.
•location (different rules & customs under different Giebe & different Arhduke/duchy)

Also depends if you're a Clergy (mixed commoner & nobles) like grey priest, blue priest, chief priest/high priest, high bishop
(Clergy nobles are treated almost the same as commoners as they are either orphaned or abandoned, for having very low mana or other reasons)

For nobles it depends on:
•Heirarchy: Laynoble, Mednoble, Archnoble, Archducal family, Branch family of Royal family, Royal family, Zent
•Noble titles & duties: Scholar, Knight, Attendant, Giebe, Archduke candidates, & Archduke, Royal family, Zent

Sometimes the treatment depends if:
(aside for being a commoner or a noble)
•baptized
•orphaned
•gender
•married (depends on ranking, 1st wife, 2nd wife, etc.)
•slave
•namesworn
•large mana
•many elements
•legit heir
•adopted
•graduated from noble academy (graduating signifies legitimate noble by having schtappe)
•factions
•royal family or branch royal family

Extra:
•marriage compatibility (depends if commoner or noble, faction, mana, position & age)

Omg thank you so much!!! I've been so curious to see the map of the country ever since the first map of the duchy was so limited.

Hell now I'm wondering how the continent or the whole globe looks like! I always thought it would be impossible to see a proper map of the country since parchment was the only paper available and considering how impossible it would be for a mere commoner no matter how powerfull the magic of mc would be.

Of course the author is the one to provide the maps ;P
She only release to those relevant for the story, so the whole world map is totally impossible since the MC is focused only around 1 country (more specifically Ehrenfest, some of Royal Academy and now the Alexandria). By the way, the author just recently released the map of the Royal Academy (south east part of) for the enjoyment and smoother understanding of the readers. I'm not sure if there will be one for Dunkelfelger since the spin-off story focuses on Hannelore and Dunkelfelger..

ok, so by your comment and reading Ehrenfest is a "small" by land territory/province/achduchy. but when you look on the map, land wise it's rather large compared to some. now is the author talking economic "small" wise or "small" political wise, cause that would make far more since in calling it small in those terms than calling it small in land terms.

Ehrenfest is under Yurgenschmidt country, a middle rank duchy both in terms of land size and politically (not in terms of population since they're currently in shortage of due to recent decade political change) but in reality, their territory and it's people is not on par with the higher rank ones yet in terms of mindset, manners and quality of territory since they have just been ranked up without any preparations nor background of what is require of being part of the higher rank duchies (Sylvester admitted of this).

Analogy: You can say it's like being an upstart in nobility, like from a rich merchant to suddenly having a noble title without any background of nobility tradition and culture. That's why upstart nobles are always very looked down upon since they only rank up without any background (mannerisms, knowledge of power dynamics, what requires/duties of being a noble). Same with Ehrenfest, they just suddenly rank up in ranks politically but doesn't have what it takes to be part of the upper ranks.

What are required of the upper ranks?

•Due to the recent political change, as part of the winning territories (hence they have high rank as well), they are required to provide support for the Royalty (Central Government)/Zent like mana, skilled workers (like scholars), power (military support) and etc.

•Their noble duties also somewhat require them to look after (support) of the lower duchies as well (I forgot which specific aspect) as part of the top ranks.

•They must provide excellent hospitality (impeccable manners) that shows their power, excellence and prestige? By not bringing shame towards royal family nor belittle them.

•Their archduke candidates enrolled in the academy must shows excellence in academic performance since they're in the top rank (the pressure of that can be shown in Hannelore's life, archduke candidate of Dunkelfelger).

•They must think of win-win situation that benefits everyone without giving up their territory's interests during negotiation.

•Specially in terms of welcoming external territory marriage candidates for the archduke candidates, they must think of how it benefit both duchies.

Like in case of previous Aub Ehrenfest, the princess from Ahrenbach fell for him while he already had a wife, and since the foreign territory princess have higher duchy rank than them, the original wife became the 2nd wife instead which leads to internal conflict with the existing nobles & factions in Ehrenfest which affects them up until today.

•On top of that, they must always think not only outside political dynamics but also prioritizes their own duchy's internal issues as well and balancing both of them (this shows their duchy capability to solve their own problems).

This shows that Ehrenfest is still not ready for that since they failed mostly in the list above.

You can say that Ehrenfest was an upstart in terms of economy. Without Rozemyne's idea, they have no territorial specialty nor industry that they can be proud of. You can also see their overall infrastructures and people's hygiene practices in the capital are still in the boonies (before Rozemyne suggest upgrade in look, service quality and hygiene practices), as commented by someone from higher duchy.

They don't even have external territory trading partners in the first place (except for few traveling merchants), they have no customer visit in their territory space during territorial tournaments since they have no business or nothing special to trade with. Even during the Archduke Conference, the reason Sylvester manage to arrive in time during the temple skirmish with the previous high bishop & the foreign frog-faced noble was because they don't have tea party invitation in between the Archduke meetings, and since they are in the lowest duchy rank they're not interesting to be visited by other duchy so he skipped it and rush back to Ehrenfest.

Duchy rankings usually based on:

•Quality of people (students academic performance, includes their performance during territorial tournaments, attendance customer handling during territorial tournament and scholar presentations).

•Export of skilled workers as part of support for the Central Government/Royalty/Zent).

•Economic power (includes spreading of trends and trading capabilities, that's why Ahrenbach was a high rank duchy due to it's only opened country border with international trading).

•Political alliance (the current upper rank duchies only get those ranks it's because they sided with the 5th prince (current Zent Trauerqual) during last political war, the losing territories got demoted in their ranks instead.

•Political power (includes military strength support, or having asset that other duchy don't have).

•Land size (I'm not quite sure if it's still accurate since this may have conflicting criteria with other factors). Basically the concept is: the bigger the land, the more resources and man power you have, the more richer and powerful your country is.

This only change when the winning duchy during previous political war as the key main factor of being part of the upper rank duchies during Zent Trauerqual reign. It got worse as the current Zent don't have the Getrussheit to redraw duchy territory borders, Werkestock a losing territory don't have their own duchy foundation (don't have their Aub, don't know where the key & foundation are located) so their territory was split and supported by Ahrenbach & Dunkelfelger, but it's futile since their foundation only support their own territory so their mana don't reach outside their own territories that's why the duchy turns into vast sand without any food to grow.

If I remember correctly, Myne/Rozemyne always mentions Ehrenfest is closer to small territory than medium (due to it's population density as well), which is considered to be near the bottom of the middle-sized territories.

yea....in terms of land size itself, they would be middle to large if you look at the map. everything else, goes along with what myne and you are saying, they are small. now it makes since. ty. yea the manga and anime do not!! go in depth with a lot of this stuff in the first season and it's so confusing to read along and everyone is ahead of me. because i refuse to go forward and get myself more mixed up be skipping things and have to double back. wweeee!!!
