i always thought it's just a play on words coz Oto sounds just like otou (dad /father in japanese). i also thought the same with Masaki's name and with how Hii-kun calls him "Ma-cha" coz it's like Hii-kun is saying the shortened version of "Mama"
In the side stories he confirmed that Oto is indeed a nickname for “Otou-san” but what’s also funny is his full name is actually Mochizuki Aoto but I think it’s written in different characters in Japanese
