I think the reason why he says he doesn't want any children is because he knows he can't have a kid with Violet and it's to protect her(?) From feeling hurt, I think it's his own way of being considerate of her, kinda like ignorance is bliss kind of thing

No she told him if he was so curious, he could open it *himself* or burn it, meaning she didn’t want to read it nor hear it. HE said “Instead, I would prefer to read it out loud.” And read it anyway after she said she didn’t want it. She already knew the gist of what the letter would contain, she only said he can continue reading it to watch him squirm because he was obviously taken aback at how ugly her mother was and overstepped his bounds. He’s a pompous asshole.
And he most definitely can burn the letter if his mistress expressly told him to. No matter who it’s from.
