honestly very cool, i like the setup of kanae dreaming, and the reader is supposed to guess which part is actually the dream (the murder reality or the happier reality).
personally, i think that the murder one was the true reality (presuming she killed natsuko after finding out she was alr dating a guy), and the happier one was memories of the inciting incident & kanae trying to comfort herself as if things had gone differently.
the end is after she kills herself/ goes off the deep end. desperate to have a happy ending with natsuko and she remains in that dream. the reason why i think the murder is reality is because even in the happy reality she spends with natsuko and her kid, there are still the ominous sfx of the ringing/tinging sounds she had while she was getting rid of natsukos body. as if hinting that the true reality is barely peeking through her delusions. really interestingly done!

so basically 'host is down' refers to the fact that the master has a parasite, and yes i believe the master died when he got that injury and led to the parasite taking over. interesting story!
