I imagine they know that, they're saying NARRATIVELY, they'd like some believability to the reasons why he's such a POS to the male lead and are hoping a background story will provide the right context to at least UNDERSTAND him and tolerate him as the male lead. That's what most people expect in a cohesive story where toxicity is involved. Unfortunately that's not the case with most comics, but some do it fine. For example, the authors other work, BJ Alex, he's actually believable in why he keeps the MC at arms length and places his boundaries rather harshly, though he obviously takes it too far and ends up needing a mental ass kicking.
