I haven't read the novel, and I honestly have zero clue if the short stories are canon, buuut...
Chapter 19.6 seems to imply that Al becomes a true/full-blooded vampire in the future! His nephew describes him as having "black hair and black eyes" (p. 5), even though Al currently has light brown hair and grey eyes (ch. 6, p. 42). And since Kiev explains in the same chapter that a vampire's hair and eyes usually become black after they've been turned...
The true question is whether Akira also becomes a vampire, since he already has black hair (and Albert Jr. doesn't mention his eye colour)
there's no novel, the short stories are canon extras i think!
and Al's been slowly turning more vamp-y since the beginning (as a human he had blond hair + green eyes, and got brown hair + gray eyes over like 8 years) so Al having black hair + eyes in 19.6 doesn't tell us if he becomes a full vamp unfortunately
