but i feel like people are acting really weird about jungwon jungwon has never really said anything to hyesung after they started dating to make him believe that he needs to lose weight. hyesung’s insecurities about his body image comes from external factors, jungwon doesnt even know that his stalker ex was saying that shit about hyesung and jungwon’s obsession with his OWN outer appearance seems to stem from him being a child entertainer (which… yikes…) and an obvious eating disorder. but jungwon has never said that hyesung shouldnt eat? he never pushed that unhealthy ideal onto his own boyfriend? in fact, he’s been extremely worried, especially since hyesung is an athlete. like idk i cant be the only one reading him like this haha
Yeah it's definitely odd, especially given that as an athlete he isn't even fat he's just super jacked which you'd think would be a desirable thing but I think they're showing it in terms of like the "fashion" crowd and their extreme body standards (cuz they've also drawn those characters like very skeletal skin and bones type and saying how they dont have stamina and all)(+ they did show that like hyesung family and sports friends and all obviously support his build cuz again he isn't even fat or unhealthy so it seems to be more of like the circle around jungwon who have the extreme outlook on his body) but I also think they're just showing what SK is generally like cuz body standards there are also very extreme even aside from fashion industry part like you see it very often with celebs where fans don't like when they start exercising and "bulking up" even when they have the most minimal muscle too
For now idk if they're trying to comment on this societal issue or as a Korean person are writing it with the same biased thinking without realizing
But I feel it is the former only cuz I don't think their necessarily glorifying jungwon's eating habits or anything and how supportive he is of hyesung and all I don't think he's trying to be like this is a correct way or living and push it on others I think his bad habits are just personal to him and I feel this is something we'd get like a backstory explanation for and likely some trauma he will overcome by the end
oh yeah this is definitely a cultural thing. lookism in korea is so fucking crazy that it’s honestly so baffling. it’s terribly exacerbated with celebrity and idol culture. which is why i also mentioned jungwon’s own eating disorder and entertainment industry background.
i think the author is trying to do an “i love you even though you arent my usual type” story but so far it’s not landing because of how body types are treated in korea but i want to see where it goes and if there would be an attempt to challenge that
im tired of people not understanding the importance of yuki in this story. he is the single catalyst that drives the ENTIRE story forward. hell, the title "given" is literally an homage to him.
the story is about how the characters grieve after the loss of their friend. i feel like most people forget that yuki wasnt just mafuyu's ex, he was mafuyu's best friend, he was a constant throughout his childhood and adolescence. he was THERE when mafuyu admitted that he was abused, he was there when mafuyu's dad got arrested. his role in mafuyu's life and how deeply ingrained he is in mafuyu's story is so much larger than what people think it is.
and it's not just that, yuki was also hiiragi's and shizu's childhood friend too! he was also part of a huge chunk of their life, ESPECIALLY since they went to the same high school and basically had the same dream of performing music together.
uenoyama also has a major role because of the grief that yuki's death brings. and the thing that i find so amazing is that uenoyama understands ALL OF THIS. he understands yuki's importance in all their lives, and in some ways, he quite possibly understands yuki the best. he is patient and kind for most of the healing process. he doesn't pry, he doesn't overstep his boundaries, but many times he's made it clear that he is upset, that he is there for mafuyu whenever mafuyu wants to talk about it properly. he'll be the new constant.
given is about healing from the grief of a loss. and i think kizu is going through ALL the angles of such an event
THANK YOU HAHAHA
and yeah i get what you mean... i think shizu felt like an outcast in his own group of friends like mafuyu and yuki were together and according to him, hiiragi was in love with yuki but that isnt true. he's also the latest edition in their friendship anyway iirc
i think shizu resents yuki in general because he thinks himself a rebound for hiiragi. what matters is that these boys need to talk
am i the only one who doesnt think this is a dealbreaker for the manga like? they weren't together at the time and yuto was sexually inexperienced. it's right for him to explore beyond hagiwara and he did and came to the conclusion that the feelings he had were love. like they already have a power imbalance with hagiwara being his first, being older, being someone who works where he studies etc. having this happen does level the playing field and im glad the author did it.
he ate!!!’
