tw opinion!
personally I find straight up asking for consent doesn’t normally show up in BL manga. I don’t see it a lot, they kind of just get in the mood. here, I feel like Yohan (the bottom, I think?) was actually enjoying himself from his own thoughts and facial expressions. i really, REALLY, like this author, and I hope Jay doesn’t become a bad person.
Define “bad”, because Jay is not “good” overall. He’s “nice” to Yohan because he genuinely likes him, but “nice” doesn’t mean “good”.
Spoiler:
The novel series is split Into 3 parts. Payback, payoff, and paid paid back. In the last series, paid payback, you find out that Jay doesn’t really feel any emotions and that is something his mom would like him to know, then one summer he goes to a foreign country and he gets a job at a construction site where a lot of shady shit goes down. Eventually Jay kills a few people then goes back home. His mom notices he did something bad and warns him about not doing bad things and she asks again if he feels anything. Then his mom dies and he meets Yohan and seeing Yohan cry finally unfroze his heart and he wanted to take Yohan with him back to the US. Then he says he looked for him and eventually what he felt when he saw Yohan cry was forgotten.
So in short he’s a sociopath and he shows his sociopathic tendencies throughout the series even with Yohan.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t like this couple. I’ve come to the conclusion that as long as the “weaker” party knows they’re in a toxic relationship and they’re not complete doormats I don’t mind the toxicity because it just plays into the relationship. Jay is toxic af because of his mental state, but Yohan is no pushover and even though he could never win against Jay, he doesn’t have to.
Jay mentions this all the time. Yoohan feels a lot of guilt for what happened to his family, so everything Jay does to him, Yoohan considers a penance. He’s not thinking about pleasure, that’s why he doesn’t push him away. He wants to be punished.
Spoiler:
When they finally have sex, Yoohan is the one that calls up Jay and tells him to “make him cry”, which Jay does and that’s also when Yoohan finally let’s go of that guilt.
I can’t remember exactly, but Jay has been trying to get into Yoohan’s pants by using his feelings of guilt, but at the same time he’s been trying to get Yoohan to let it go using the same methods. Anyway, Yoohan ends up in his old neighborhood and if I remember correctly goes to the place where his brother was killed and I think Jay sends him a text or calls him, but that’s when he tells him to “make him cry” and meets Jay at a hotel. Then the text goes on to say that the first time was tough, but after he cries, the second round was a lot more like actual lovers. So the first round, Jay really showed no mercy since that’s what Yoohan wanted. He didn’t want to feel pleasure, he wanted to be punished.
esp the uke..
