I had a thought and soon became a realization about Roem/Loem/Rome [sorry can’t remember the name???] being particular to scents. He isn’t sensitive to smells, he just understand that his surroundings stink. They’re in a western historical era so maybe he is the way he is because the people and the place smells like shit.
