Lee was original leader/mentor of esper team and it appears he was killed during a mission with esper. Later guide discovered that every time esper uses his powers, he's seeing deaths of his parents and Lee, and guide. Esper didn't want to love bc everyone he's loved/cared for has died. He sees this as his failure to protect.
