Considering that this is titled "in the deep" I wonder if the underground premise is one that we need to just get used to. Especially since in the latest chapter MC mentioned that whatever mess is happening on the surface might not reach them underground.
So just... please find a stream or something underground to wash up in.

so you KNEW your mother killed her the last time around, and STILL this time you didn't immediately take her side????
IDK if this backstory is supposed to make me feel sorry for James, but it doesn't. Boohoo, bitch, you were literally the MOST INFORMED person among everyone, and you still kept fucking up.

I'm loving this but also Ennid's whole experience is giving me war flashbacks of my phd student days. The shit some phd students (and even some post docs and junior faculty) had to put up with was very similar, and the way some tenured professors set out to destroy careers for petty reasons was nothing short of nightmarish. If Ennid decided to turn into a villain and burn everything down I'd support him.

does anyone have any recs where the family gets to a point where they actually show genuine remorse and the MC doesn't just forgive them? I feel like this one has really good potential, and it left me wanting for more.

I'm fine with eventual forgiveness, just so long as it doesn't come too easily. I think I've read and abandoned too many stories where the MC just forgives the family without them ever apologizing or even acknowledging their past shit behaviour. So what I'm looking for would be a story where the forgiveness takes a while to be earned.
taking deep breaths and bracing myself for what is to follow...
