He said it wasn't a romantic interest, in the first confession scene. The first "rejection" was actually the relationship with his father, a perceived rejection.
Because he felt his father misunderstood him and didn't have any interest in him. For example when he went to help at his dad's place his dad gave him money and and he saw that as a rejection when it wasn't. Unlike before this time he said what he thought and they were able to clear up the misunderstanding.
The boy is an introvert and timid, seeking outer acceptance and taking a lack of overt acceptance as a rejection instead.
I freaking love that last love making scene. Really felt the love between them and the story as a whole was great.
