Well let's see, I can think of several reasons. Kaname is the ancestor of vampires. Even other purebloods are afraid of him. He is the most powerful vampire. His blood is pure and can give power to others. He sacrificed his life so that the hunters could have anti-vampire weapons so that the humans can have something that protects them for vampires. And even in death, Kaname protects Cross Academy from people with malicious intent. Good enough reasons for him to be important to the storyline?(:
