It may have been Josei but the characters were silly. Rather than be an educative work, it became a soap opera. All they did was unnecessarily hurt each other and hurt themselves instead of being proper adults and dealing with their shit. The only reason it was marked Josei was because the characters were adults. Other than that, it was just another dramatic shoujo.
You really think 'Adult' means perfection. Like adult can't be sily, can't hurt each other, can't make mistakes.
This story is perect for Josei and it has nothing like shoujo.

This could've been put in a high school setting with everything else still the same (including the sex) and it would've been shoujo. There was nothing josei about it. In fact it reminded me of Koizora and Kare wa Tomodachi which are both school life shoujo. I've read several stupid josei such as works by Yoshihara Yuki and Saitou Chiho and those, despite the dumb decisions and avoidable issues, are no doubt josei. They wouldn't work with kid characters.
