Eric realized that the animosity humans felt toward vampires (because of the population control/"culling" via the plague) would essentially make it impossible for humans and vampires to co-exist. So, Eric decided that *he* could be the scapegoat behind the entire plague/perfume scheme. As neither human nor vampire, this would make him a common enemy to humans and vampires so that they could unite despite the chaos. He asked Shell in particular to help fake his death so that Shell could rule (i.e., restore Vampire order) in a way that made humans happy as well without a crazy revolt. If I understand correctly Eric's just hanging out in the south with a newly-built(???) version of his old parents' house at the beach. It...kind of comes full circle because Eric only ever wanted a peaceful life that was out of the way. And of course Shell visits him all the time!
