Honestly, I avoided this manga because of the reviews at first but I misjudged it entirely.
They put the ML in a bad light initially, but now you can tell that he is the result of his upbringing. This was done on purpose. Character development exists.
The ML is an abandoned prince, he is avoided because he is cursed and dangerous, he is socially awkward and he struggles to act human due to being isolated due to this curse and the incident that happened when he was young.
You can tell in his flashbacks that most people he remembers are after he takes the throne so I guess that the incident didn't give him any favors and was mostly alone probably feeding into the curse.
Massacres for no good reason? 'Hunting'
Get the throne 'Survival'
He is very logical and apathetic but clearly sees something in Olive that makes him feel human. Unfortunately, he met Olive late in his life when he already killed many of her loved ones, so he was never going to earn her love in that life. You can tell he struggled to give her what she wanted because he couldn't understand human nature.
His condescending comments to his other brothers about being better very well sound like insecurity especially since they are supported by their peers, they understand what being human is like and what Olive would like while he had to be taught by beastmen in his 2nd life, a race that is discriminated against and wouldn't care if he was cursed.
I have seen much worse MLS in many other manga:
William Corona from I Tamed My Ex-Husband's Mad Dog
Clodan from The Beast Within
This is only to name a few, but are given much leeway due to how pretty they look. The ML is not innocent, but he really makes an effort to change for Olive compared to other MLs who would immediately isolate, torture, and manipulate Fls if they were ever given a chance to turn back time.
Also, those who say the ML should be 2nd prince, please don't judge just by the first few chapters.
I am not saying he is not kind or does not care for his brother, but you can tell he feels guilty about something due to Ludwig. Whether it is where the true nature of the curse came from or just that he didn't make a very strong effort to take care of his younger brother in both lives.
I just said this because I was a little frustrated. Usually, I do read top comments on a manga about the characters and if they are worth the read, but those who judge a character by the first chapter and not bother because they expected a fluffy romance only to leave a bad review when it's not the genre they wanted is a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
