Well, okay, that season 1 ending is so dramatic for barely any reason. Ian was never labeled as the smartest or a strategic chess master BUT it says his parents are lawyers and his grandpa built a massive food distribution empire in the US.
So. It seems like his family is loaded. Food distribution is also a global thing, meaning gramps definitely has some power in ANY developed country. Ian has that kind of connection but doesn't take advantage of it.
