Let's be transparent here. I love this manga, but Nemu and Maya's relationship has been toxic from the beginning. We forgive and redeem Maya's character bc he's hot. Assuming the lie "protects" Nemu is a shitty excuse at best. He pretty much says with the excuse that Nemu's self esteem is to fragile for honesty...which is even worse because every time Nemu has tried to change his look, Maya was the first person to stop him.

Yeah that's not okay to stop someone from trying to change themselves (for the better) and I understand but it's true that nemu's self esteem IS too fragile for honestly at least right now. That last page basically confirmed it. Here's to hoping that changes after this volume is over because again, figuring it out is what relationships are about. Right now they love each other and I believe that if you love someone that much you owe it to them and yourself to do your best, even if it hurts cuz it's too sad to give up without pouring out your everything. Because that's what your feelings are worth and it's not good to have regrets. At least they'll be able to say they gave it their all and have no regrets even if they decide that they won't be able to continue their relationship. If you don't want to go that far it's probably not love.
I don't feel like anyone would be giving Maya this many passes on trash behavior if he wasn't an aesthetic ideal. I also don't think people give Nemu enough credit. Yeah, his self esteem is low, but not low enough to justify lying about his bfs whereabouts.

Wait. Are we being disingenuous here? To dismiss the character's hotness is to dismiss the whole damn story! I'm a bigger fan of the AkiraxShimakawa pairing because of the couple's complimentary aesthetic and consensual beginning of their relationship. However, I realize that I was quick to redeem Shimakawa for forcefully kissing Nemu because of how hot sensei made the character. That's problematic and I had to admit that. Maya is a little harder for me to pass because while he's hot, he's a whole ass rapist. Being honest is openly admitting that aesthetically deficient characters won't be as easily forgiven for crimes and moral missteps. This also applies to reality. However, sensei does make a valiant effort to mature Maya and have him feel intense remorse for initially being a criminal. Sensei also is a kickass author and plot developer in letting us witness Maya prioritize his own comfort over Nemu's right to be informed. She is CLEARLY illustrating that his character is still imperfect and still in development. Which is how I'm confused as to how all these ppl are misdirection the blame at the victim here. I can only assume the people doing so are like super young

Not everything has to do with his looks and while there may be cases like that, this isn't one of them. I still haven't completely gotten over the rape if I'm being honest but I'm not gna lump his lying to protect nemu with that and just hate him. I think the more mature way of looking at it is through both perspectives which includes maya's reasoning. Is it such a hateful thing to not want to do smth to make your lover insecure? Are young people stupid? That's not accurate. Stupidity spans all ages. I knows TONS of moronic older people. BUT, youth and ignorance kinda go hand in hand tbh. When you're young, you're ignorant to certain aspects of life just based on you never getting to experience it. Meanwhile, I don't hate Maya's character, he just isn't a likeable character to anyone who takes his actions at face value. Tbh, I LOVE this manga. It's one of my faves. But getting through the first few chapters was hard because he was so aggressive with repeatedly raping Nemugasa. I picked up reading yaoi around 7 months ago, so all the rape tropes shocked me. However, a friend told me to keep reading because the story gets better. It did improve and I ended up buying the first 7 volumes lol. I am looking forward to the way sensei develops Maya's character, because so far, he's kind of a shitty human being with soft spots for his boyfriend.

Same with the rape. I'll stop as soon as I see the author setting the stage for sexual assault. I had to power through the first few chapters of this. I wish she'd give Shimakawa and Akira their own manga. They are such an amazing couple and their relationship can evolve into a great story. I felt like she also could have followed Shunpei and Fumi from Elektel Delusion into university. I felt like their story was incomplete.
