I would give jihyun a second chance ONLY AS A FRIEND, because if he has really changed and I can really see it, I'll accept it, but I could never really 100% forgive someone who not only assaulted me but also DESTROYED the possibility of having a football (or soccer) career. He could NEVER EVER, become my best friend (or even more impossible, a lover), but I could never abandon him for real knowing that he really put all of his efforts into changing, plus that he was once a very good friend. I personally am bad at completely abandoning someone I once cared about, when I know they want to change for the better, because I like to believe people can really change.
So I don't think chiwoo should just stay away from him, but he shouldn't pretend they can be friends like before, because that is just impossible in many ways.
It's understandable honestly, it mostly comes down to the individual person and how relevant they consider to be what was done to them. If they don't think of the damage they experienced as something very deep, then who would I be to tell them they should "give it more importance".
Like for example, someone who lost the ability to walk due to an accident, only they know how relevant that incident was to them, if they can talk lightly and joke about it, then cool, I'll respect that; if they prefer not to touch the subject because they consider it to be a sensitive topic, I'll not mention it then, and I'll also respect that.
So I'm reading chapter 15, they go to pride 2019...
WHICH FEELS WEIRD BECAUSE I WENT TO THE RAINBOW PRIDE IN TOKYO 2019, I AM GETTING CONFLICTED FEELINGS. But just for the record, it was a pretty cool event!! Though it was kind of odd to see so many brands who were there as "allies", but at least the Donki store was there selling binders and queer flags and other stuff hehe
I've waited for more decent DID representation since Split's horrible way of doing so, but I'm not sure how to feel about it when it's YAOI/BL xD... hopefully we get some decent representation. So far 3 identities have been presented with no clue of who might be the host, let's see how this develops...
I'll admit that I got a little pissed when I read him saying "Okama Bar", since okama is a kind of like "fagg0t", it's a slur to call gay men and/or drag queens(or trans women even), since they are the same thing to most japanese people, and as a queer person that generalization really pisses me off. But I know this whole manga was a hot mess, and since they're from an older generation it'd make sense for them to know the word Okama more than Gay.
(still pissed about the representation the gay bar had though, it was ridiculized in a kind of insulting way, but I know I have to let it go too)
Mate, okama was derogatory, much like the word queer was years back. Now, it's become your standard umbrella term for drag queens, effeminate men, gay men, and what not (much like onabe and I forgot that other term is gaining traction). You have a point that it's generational, but in this case I'm pretty sure in his context it was for drag queens. After all, he worked there.
Long opinion ahead... (sowwy)
I want to believe that the indigenous representation being inaccurate, to the point of being racist by ignorance (exhibit A being: white skinned indigenous people in Australia), is because this webtoon is tagged as "supernatural", so these indigenous people are just completly an element of the supernatural and ficticious part of this story. Which makes me believe that magical realism is something that asian literature culture doesn't really know much about, because this story might seem more like being magical realism instead of supernatural, but doesn't fully get to be it because it lacks accuracy to properly have the "realism" part of it. So I can forgive this, just ever so slightly, because this is not the first time asian people have been racist by ignorance :^))))))
jesus christ some of you need to look up what racism means
What was used in this manhwa was an artistic resource to better identify the characters and relate them to themselves in the present. Before saying "asians" do this or that, which I remind you is racist itself. Jesus Christ is portrayed in glorious strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes, born in the Middle East!
I actually was trying to give benefit of doubt, because I read other comments mentioning that it was racist right away, when we don't really know why the author made that decision. I'm just personally not so sure if it's ok to deny racism because I know that many asian people (as people born and raised in Asia) don't really know much about racial issues from the western world, and can become kind of racist from that
I understand that, that's why I made an analysis on literature genres, I was purpously doubting why people where calling it "racist" right away when none of us REALLY know why the author decided on keeping the skin color of the protagonist's past life white, I ain't no expert in australian native culture to know how accurately the author portrayed the topic in general, we don't know how much of what has been told is pure fiction or based from actual historical facts (do you?). But I personally don't deny the possibility of being a decision out of racism by ignorance. And when I said "asian people" I was not referring to race, I was reffering to "people born and raised in Asia" which can be misleading so I apologize about that not being clear, the thing is that people from Asia have had some history of being racist because of lack of knowledge on racial issues in the western world, plus I know that japanese people can be VERY racist towards non-asian looking people, because well, I lived there for a year! And of course I'm not saying EVERYONE, that's why I say "can be" or "have been", I never said "asians are..."
On the funny side, we are kind of assuming the author is korean, but that is to be expected from a Korean Webtoon lol, maybe it's some foreigner who speaks korean fluently and lives there lol
Sorry if I sounded harsh. It's just that we are here like just conjecturing anyways :) Although I not always agree, as working as a scenographer I've seen all kinds of distortion scenarios in the name of art. Also, eastern cultures are naturally closed to western(not that i agree on), but the opposite is also true. I visited and lived in a whole lot of places, and witnessed all kinds o racism, open or not, I agree their mentality are way closer on the subject. But I now live in a place were there is a huge japanese community and I must say, they suffer their share in the west too, in the western art also, I must say. But oh well, humanity has a long way to go in learning about equality and unity right?
There is some happiness from just confessing to someone you know won't like you back, it gives you some relief, I was super happy the first time I did even though I got rejected, mainly because I knew they would, but I was so happy to have the courage to tell them /o/ so Akira's happiness is probably greater than mine from then haha I'm glad :^3
WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT THE NEW GUY (the previous sub) IS THE WOOOOOORST!!! I really hope he just disappears from existence, and hopefully no one like him exists IRL. THE WORLD IS MUCH A BETTER PLACE WITHOUT PEOPLE LIKE HIM.
On the other hand, the only thing I'm certain about Chanwoo and MD is that both are heartbroken, the rest is not so clear as many people noticed by the chaotic comment section and I prefer not to get too much into that until the next chapter is up.
Personally (and it's ok if you don't agree, so spare me please) I think FOR NOW they are both fools, one who became unprofessional and (a bit) abusive, and the other being a stubborn prideful dude who doesn't know when to quit for his own good.
