Actually, they're not entirely wrong. Did you even ask yourself why Yvonne picked Derrick and not his brother for the brainwashing ? It’s precisely because Derrick is the perfect pawn : ever since Penelope arrived into the family he has been putting blame onto her instead of admitting his own guilt. Even without the brainwashing he had be willing to throw Penelope under the bus (cf the hunting competition). He's hateful and only needed a little push to act on an impulse he always had within him.
