That's because looking at the portrait messed with his mind drawing him in. So when he looks away it blurs in his memory enough to be similar to someone he knows but no full clarification on whom. We the readers know, but he can't because of the pressure from the portrait won't let him.

He always feels something familiar from anything random and then just fails to remember yang yan out of all people .I know he is surrounded by way too many girls but come on even a toddler would remember yang yan after hearing artifact array masters .Duh what the heck have you been doing while roaming with yang yan all over the shadowed star all along and then he just thinks is yang yan also a artifact array master as if he has discovered something so amazing .Gosh the author should not be thinking of readers as some reading machines without brains . The story is starting to get way too boring now

Gosh this manga is so amazing but the speed of releases and the translator cutting chapters so short is actually single handed killing the spirit of this wonderful manga. From the way the are releasing the chapters ,it seems like they will complete this when I will be 80 years old.
