I think you switched their names also I guess it was kind of hinted that he was having a difficult time with the confession possibly having to do with underlying feelings. If someone had no feelings rejecting them would be quick and easy. Mesumi was explaining this to him when she said “I wonder if not being able to reject is the same as accepting.” He eventually rejected him in the end but I think it was more of a resolve to make everyone happy and at the time his happiness was with both of them but staying together with Futaba. I wonder if their breakup had to do with going to different schools and not having time for each other. With Futaba not there his feelings for touma could have grown.
