At least the father have enough sense in that family. I think the mother is at fault too for letting her child dream a wishful dream. I get that she want to gain some influence by having her daughter be the fav child of the empress but she should also bear in mind that there's consequences and that spot is not theirs to begin with. Her husband is right they shouldn't be greedy. He might not think they'll get to this point but they did. And the child is spoilt because the mother keep mothering her the wrong way too.
