Duuuude I'm the same fr Ain is horrible, I always knew he was going to play the "it was always me" card but to turn out to be an asshole? Damn... I thought it was going to be a lovely reveal and Michel would be crying of happiness but his love for Ain blinds him to realize he is treating him and the servants like trash... I lost all motivation to continue reading -_- As you said the author does know how to make the characters truly love themselves but I don't know why they had to make him such a duche bag if all of first season he was all kind and stoic... It's like I have to learn to like this completely new character rip

Ain indeed is a terrible piece of shit, but I think the story's going to be about him mending his ways? A bit like BJ Alex, if you've read that.
When he was "Ain" he was just a servant so there were not the complicated things that surround nobility (or lack thereof), and I think this is also why Michel now feels self conscious around "Ian", because he said he'd love "Ian" properly after loving "Ain" and now that they're one and the same he's conflicted (like, if I discovered the dude I'm suppsoed to marry is the same other dude I've spent a month falling for my brain would just zap for a bit).
Maybe Ian's acting like a jerk because he's pissed he's fucked everything up too with this little charade, because he thought he'd meet an asshole noble he wouldn't be too sad to kill and istead got confronted with the sweetest most stubborn cinnamonroll so now he's a bit conflicted too (but obv can't show it cause "i'm not a born noble so I can't show weakness yadda yadda" just fucking kiss alredy). Because I think he ACTUALLY fell in love with (or at least he clearly fancies) Michel.
(I'm also an undying optimist, btw, and love assholes tops/bottoms groweling on the ground before their beloved to ask for mercy and gain their love back so I may be delulu too lmao).

 Sorry in advance for the essay response . I really understand how Ian's portrayal here makes him look awfully evil, and that's why I always recommend that manhwa readers also follow along with the novel so as to get more exposition. The best way I can describe Ian is as a deeply wounded and distrustful person whose cruel nature serves both to protect him and as a weapon against others, particularly nobles and unfortunately, that includes Michelle. Ian has been terribly hurt and abused by nobles, which has led him to develop a deeply cynical and distrustful view of them. I am by no means excusing his behaviour, but I' liken him to an abused animal baring its fangs in order to protect itself. He expects people to hurt and betray him, which is why he feels the need to always have the upper hand. But this is also why I believe Michelle is best suited to reach Ian. Despite his tender and soft countenance, he isn't a pushover, nor does the story depict him as someone who can “fix” Ian. Rather, his consistent actions challenge the beliefs Ian has built around himself. It takes a while, but as you read on, you really do get to see Ian's walls begin to break down. I really hope Chu and Chada will be able to capture all the nuances of Ian's character and their relationship as depicted in the novel.

Honestly I love the novel but I have conflicting feelings about Ian, I understand him but I can't stand him at the same time. I'm not saying he's not justified for feeling angry and wanting to take revenge but the way he talks in the novel is really cruel... From the words he said to his mother, to the way he thought about her, as a reader you KNOW that despite what he says he loved her deeply, but he still talks badly about a person who only did her best to make sure he survived in the north. And maybe that's because he is And yes he is angry and probably even wishes he hadn't survived and his mother got her happy ending instead but once again he's so cruel about it it turns me off of him. The same things he says about Michele which he often compares to his mom and you know that it's because it's the only other person he comes to love, but he's still so cruel to someone who means well and wants to love him and understand him despite the lies and the gaslighting... And the sexual assault when Michele's drugged asleep/unconscious because of his fever, it's like since Ian has experienced worse types of violation (and he did, nobody is denying that) he doesn't think what he's doing to Michele is wrong at all but it's still awful to read. Not to mention what he did to Katya, after traumatizing her, mentally torturing her and stripping her away of her childhood innocence, driving her away from everything she has always known and leaving her to fend for her life after provoking her constantly into taking defensive measures... I honestly haven't read the whole novel yet, but if in the end she comes back just to take revenge on him and kill him she'd be 100% justified. Still, I want to see him get some redemption through the love he reluctantly feels for Michele but I find him way more appealing in the manwha where I don't have to listen 24/7 to his constant cruel monologue <s>and you get to see his tiddies and huge ASSets.</s>
