The author could have made the evil empress mom make the FL write letters about not wanting to contact

I agree. Her family is powerful but not powerful enough to visit their own kid when they're worried? Where there's a will there's a way
Honestly though in an IRL scenario, even if a small kid sent their loving family a letter saying they never want to contact them again, I doubt the family would just be like "It makes me sad but it's understandable. I'll never see you again until you ask for me. I'll continue to write you letters nonetheless."
