Rather than three chances, it's more like. Two. The first life was the tragedy where he didn't know anything and there was so many misunderstandings but he loved and was obsessed and Huimin. But when they were in the painting world, he couldn't go anywhere without Huimin because the second he was out of range the world would freeze. So he had no opportunity to do anything without him. And in a way that made it so he had no choice but for his entire life in that world to revolve around Huimin. Which of course led to his third life where he was determined to make it right. But you can only change your character so much without actual therapy. So we end up with this.

As much as I also wanna believe he rly could have had a more peaceful life with Huimin had he learned (keyword here) to realize that obsession wasnt everything or that his third life could pan out differently with or without his best friend, I can see that his obsessive personality would probably not have adjusted to living a life that didn't revolve around Huimin since its all he knows in his first two lives and that was a long time of liiiiving. I think in a way the fact that his life in the painting world has to revolve entirely around Huimin made his obsession worse. There was no way for him to heal. What he wants to have yet is never able to staring in him in the face everyday, almost as if to mock him. The love of his life looking at him with a certain unfamiliarity. It is a special kind of torture. He really needs therapy.
