In my opinion, and this is just me. He's more coerce into bringing her back than brainwashed, he still had the option or mental capacity of turning it down but he gave in to his greed of having her (i guess?) so it's more having someone you trusted with your life or your last chance at another life betraying you for their own greed but at the same time saying that all of the hurt you feel is for your own good or all of that was for you. Like being gaslighted to the max but you're aware it's happening.
