I would guess the same thing that happened to the first woman's baby, the one in the first chapters who kept looking for her "missing child"
The "priest" needed sacrifices, so that he wouldn't kill everyone in the village right away, because of he did then people would come way faster. Anyway, he would wait for the children to be born so that then he had two sacrifices for the price of one. At least that's my guess
