I keep reading this manga, over and over, but a detail bothers me...
He was in an accident and became deaf a year ago. But up until now, he was able to talk, right ? So, basically, he should still be able to talk...
I know that it may be difficult for him to talk now he's deaf, but wouldn't it be easier for Kazuki, at least at the beginning, while they're learning the sign language ?
(I'm sorry for the grmmatical errors, but I'm not fluent in english...)
Ah, for starters one could say "it's a manga" and be done with it.
In the story he states the accident being the cause but it's not entirely clear how much damage he received apart from the obvious scars.
(One could start and theorize if he'd been knocked down from his bike, loosing his helmet and gotten his brain smushed, which would make him a lucker of sorts to be still breathing and walking)
It would be much easier to just take the plot at face-value, since it wasn't explained in detail. But based on the location if the scars and the trauma being due to a bike accident, I'd guess he'd suffered injuries to multiple parts of the brain (or maybe even damage due to brain haemorrhage afterwards), which could explain him being deaf and mute, since both abilities are located in different lobes.
But he does make some sounds when they're doing it. I know that people who are deaf aren't actually completly silent. But I thought that those who were mute were totally silent while those who were "only" deaf could make some noise.
When they are born deaf, it is logic that they can not speak; but when they become deaf later, technically they can talk, right ? (... this is actually a real question that I'd like to solve...)
I know that it's a manga, one shot moreover, and that those details can not all be explained... But I love this mangaka's work, and I can not stop myself from wanting more and from loonking deeply in the story >.<
Tnaks for your answer Morcheeba, which was quite detailed !
You're welcome, I tought I had gone overboard (again). About those sounds he's making; if you stop for a minute and think about how "your thoughts" turn into "voice"...We're making noises while exhaling. Those noises differ due to the tension in our vocal chords. Have you ever had a 4-year-old happily jumping on your stomach? It's unintentional exhalation ^^ (and a lot of that, while we're at it) Ah, back to the point: if your body is strained (like, for example your neck), the gap between the vocal chords shifts, too. (It's like reading out loud while performing a handstand, your voice sounds squashed no matter what).
About becoming deaf after learning to speak: generally, yes. Some don't like to speak because they can't hear themselves and it takes plenty of training to estimate the volume used. (Even if you plug your ears, you "hear" your voice vibrating inside and it allows you to roughly estimate how "loud" you are - if you are not used to it, it's unnerving to either whisper or yell and being dependent on the reaction of your surroundings)
I once met a 50-year-old journalist who'd been deaf for about 25 years by then and we had a thoroughly thrilling evening of exchanging stories - it took us both about the same time to get used to the other: him to reading my lip-movement and me to his way of pronouncing. Totally worth the horrid coffee ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
I do understand that one can't know the volume of his voice if he is deaf, but... I thought that it could be quite "easy" to found the right volume.
In my mind, it is much more frustrating to struggle to make yourself clear by signing or writing than to "test" your voice's volume until you found the right one. I mean, if the person in front of you doesn't know the sign language and if you are in a hurry to make yourself clear, it may by veeeery frustrating for you... So I thought that it was easier and more "confortable" for them to learn how to control their voices.
In fact, I think I can't really imagined what it is to be deaf. I always thought that it was "worse" to be blind than to be deaf, but it is probably a stupid healthy person's point of view. Somehow, your answer makes me realize how terrible it is to be in a complete and perpetual silence...
Anyway, it probably was very interesting to talk with this journalist, regarding this matter !
(Once again, I'm sorry if I'm not clear enough or if my grammar makes your eyes bleed, but it is 1:15 am, I have some difficilties to think straight, and it's twice harder to think in english ! >.< ... And thank you !)
You may know it already, but just in case... There is a spin-off, Shiratori Reiichi story :
