probably a lot of you know but for those who dont (since the translator didnt seem to know either) in japan, gay marriage is not legal, but! gay couples get 'married' though a loophole, that is essentially the older person in the couple 'adopting' the younger one (regardless of age), this way the two are under the same family registry, and are legally considered family!
so when they talk about doing 'adoption' they are talking about the equivalent of getting married!
