
Because I'm not so sure about it, but isn't it some kind of traditional thing in Asia to take your shoes off before commiting suicide? I think I recognized this in some historical films and also saw it once in a documentary of Aokigahara. Well, that's for Japan I must add. Does anybody know anything about this? Google was pretty vague ...

Pretty vague and so many theories. Like "they saw it in a film (like samurai for example) and copied", to show that someone killed themselves there in case the body isn't found, "ghosts don't have legs", it's kinda the same like they do before entering their homes (in this case it's the afterlife), not to be grounded in this world etc. ...
